I happened upon this image from Gavin Johnson’s Flickr images tagged with peace via a circuitous path (flash of the electrons to Frank A. Hilario).
Over on Flickr, in fact, there are some nifty image pools:

I wonder if there is a way to get the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists “atomic clock” represented on PP. Would it be a good idea, if we could?

Board Statement
17 January 2007We stand at the brink of a second nuclear age. Not since the first atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki has the world faced such perilous choices. North Korea’s recent test of a nuclear weapon, Iran’s nuclear ambitions, a renewed U.S. emphasis on the military utility of nuclear weapons, the failure to adequately secure nuclear materials, and the continued presence of some 26,000 nuclear weapons in the United States and Russia are symptomatic of a larger failure to solve the problems posed by the most destructive technology on Earth.
As in past deliberations, we have examined other human-made threats to civilization. We have concluded that the dangers posed by climate change are nearly as dire as those posed by nuclear weapons. The effects may be less dramatic in the short term than the destruction that could be wrought by nuclear explosions, but over the next three to four decades climate change could cause drastic harm to the habitats upon which human societies depend for survival.
Maybe we should have honorary members of the Posse, people from history recognized for their contributions to peace and non-violence. If so, I’d nominate Elihu Burritt.
I suspect Elihu Burritt would have signed up for the Posse. In the 1830s-40s he had at least one group called the “League of Universal Brotherhood” (or was it “Friends of Peace?” or “Brussels Peace Congress?”) that seemed to have many similar aims as the Posse (whatever our aims). In addition to convincing people in at least the US and UK to sign a pledge to practice non-violence, he also campaigned against slavery in the US.

I came across a story in the Chronicle of Higher Education about a Sudanese university, Ahfad University for Women, that illustrates how educational efforts can deflect violence: http://chronicle.com/weekly/v53/i19/19a03601.htm. Let me know if you can’t read it.
